Pergolas for Melbourne & Geelong homes
Open-roof pergolas that frame a deck or courtyard with real proportions — sized to your house, oriented for Melbourne's low winter sun and high summer sun, and kept the right side of the pergola-versus-verandah line.
A pergola is an open structure — battens, slats or a permeable cover, no solid roof. That distinction isn't just architectural: under Victorian building rules the moment you add a solid, waterproof roof, the structure is reclassified as a verandah and the permit picture changes. We design to what you actually want (shade, dappled light, a weatherproof room) and handle the classification honestly.
Proportion is everything with pergolas. Post size, beam depth and batten spacing have to relate to the span and to the house, or the whole thing reads flimsy. We draw it to scale first.
Timber or aluminium
Timber suits period and character homes and takes stain to match a deck. Aluminium (including louvered opening-roof systems) suits contemporary homes and long spans, and won't move with the seasons. We build both and will tell you which fits your house rather than which is easier for us.
Orientation and shade that works
Melbourne's summer sun is high and its winter sun is low. Batten spacing and orientation can be tuned so a pergola shades the deck in February yet lets winter light reach the windows. It's a five-minute conversation at design stage that changes how much you use the space.

Common questions
Pergola or verandah — what's the difference?
A pergola is open (battens/slats, permeable cover). Add a solid waterproof roof and it's legally a verandah, which almost always needs a building permit. We design to your intent and sort the paperwork either way.
Do all pergolas need a permit in Victoria?
Not all — smaller, lower, correctly-sited open pergolas can be exempt under Schedule 3 of the Building Regulations, but the conditions are specific and heritage overlays or easements can change things. We confirm before building.
